The repatriation of deceased military persons in foreign lands and connecting them to families at home has always been a difficult matter. Only till the advent of DNA has much of that been possible today.
It generally begins with a government agency’s exhumation of bodies killed on the battlefield and then attempting to identify who they are and how best to connect them to their biological family. This involves a great deal of science, DNA extraction, and genealogical sleuthing. Sometimes the identification of the bodies is made, and families are connected, while in another case, there simply isn’t enough evidence to make an identification, or it is impossible to locate related family members.
So, investigators have quite a task and struggle to identify who these soldiers are and how to identify and reconnect them with specific families. The desired outcome, therefore, satisfies both of those objectives. Of course, in many circumstances, either one of those conditions cannot be made and the repatriation of the bodies does not bring identification of the deceased and his biological family.
GEN-FIND’s work, therefore, is an extension of the military recovery program’s effort to help identify these deceased persons and then attempt to locate their family members from their possessions, DNA determinations and whatever else information the case provides us. Our firm will work with all those programs to help with the identification of military personnel and their families.
Our firm is often called upon by legal clients to ascertain ancient ownership on lands holding oil & gas reservoirs or other natural resources. In addition, sometimes the search for ownership has nothing to do with the natural resources but might involve access rights to the land. In both cases, the original owners are deceased, and several generations may have followed.
Clients struggle with many of these cases because the surviving descendant owners of these lands are in question. Who now owns those resource rights? Who now holds ownership in the rights of access?
In many of these property cases, the original owner is now deceased, and successive generations have legally inherited his property rights, most often without knowing. Further, in some countries like Canada, the resource ownership went with the land, unlike today, and sometimes further, the land was sold, but the resource ownership was retained by the family or vice-versa. The legal ownership of these cases can, over time, get blurred.
GEN-FIND is here to help clients decipher, from a genealogical standpoint, who are the descendant owners of these properties and their entailing rights.
Many insurance companies struggle to determine who should be paid out on policies when the policy owner has passed away. They struggle to know where to look for beneficiaries and heirs of those policies as often they don’t have a clue about the policyholder’s family & friends and their whereabouts. In some cases, the beneficiary may be someone that is only a friend to the late policyholder, and they too may have died in the intervening years. Who should benefit from this insurance?
Your goal, as an insurance company, is to determine and find the beneficiaries & heirs as quickly and efficiently as possible, with minimal expense. Heirs might be easier to trace, though this too has its complications, however, it may be much more of a convoluted and difficult task to locate a beneficiary who is only a friend of the policyholder!
Let our firm try to help you with your investigation. GEN-find has over 40 years of successful research into cases just like these.
How many of us have heard of situations where bank accounts have been left unclaimed – often due to the death of the account holder? In many of these cases, family members are completely unaware that the account exists.
The sad component to this story is that most financial institutions, today, make no effort to find who the beneficiaries & heirs are, nor make any effort to trace their whereabouts. The reality is that these unclaimed funds sit dormant for years and eventually become part of government coffers. There are lists of unclaimed bank accounts, now held by the government, but they too have no real interest in locating the rightful beneficiaries or heirs, and nor are they willing to provide background information on these funds of the depositor to help others determine if the funds may be that from your own family member. It is all a rather sad state of the affairs with regard to unclaimed bank accounts!
However, if a legal client contacts GEN-FIND about a case that they have where they suspect bank deposits may be unaccounted for a client, we will endeavour to determine if such funds can be located.
GEN-FIND is here to try and help legal counsel bring closure to some of those cases where unclaimed funds are thought to be held by banks or other financial institutions. In some cases, our client will be the financial institution holding the funds themselves. In other cases, they may be the family member that has documented evidence to support their claim.
GEN-FIND stands behind its research, and we are well-known in the industry for our very detailed source documented findings and supportive documents.
